Andien Broxin. Marine. Officer. Leader. A woman we meet in the very first Galaxy’s Edge book and follow throughout the series as we discover there is more than meets the eye to this special operative.
In the second book of her own series, we get to see Andien undergo the rigorous nightmare that is legion selection. Although the legion doesn't allow women in their ranks, her experience as a Marine combat arms officer fighting alongside them makes her a perfect trial candidate for selection. Despite several warnings, she sets out to prove herself during this very experimental session mandated by the House of Reason.
During the process, Andien sees the donning of the legion armor from a unique perspective. The candidate must win each piece of a leej’s kit during the grueling assessment, as they struggle to surpass each obstacle presented by the cadre.
The legionnaire’s armored belt, brimming with equipment and used as the foundation for the rest of the armor, is gifted first. Through an immense struggle while Andien helps fellow candidates, they all come to realize the symbology of the hard won kit. They must remain flexible against the cadre’s tests while being hardened to keep from failing. They eventually learn their shared experience locks them together like the belt, with a focus on succeeding, despite the difficulty.
Each successive piece of kit won, has some link with the training, while also bringing forward a grim reality. As they assembled more of the armor, there are fewer candidates left in the course. The eventual outcome is clear.
Only the 1% of the 1% will ever wear a full legion set.
But the selection is only the beginning. Far more of the candidates will fail actual legion training, when time, talent, and physicality will continue to be tested, and only the few will remain to wear the title…
Legionnaire.
I'm guessing the bucket is the last piece of armor to be won? Haven't read Forget Nothing yet. I will have to rectify that mistake.
Awesome. Another series to read. 18, no 19 books.
