In Galaxy’s Edge, the US Army Rangers mostly inspired the role of the legionnaires, with aspects of the special forces thrown in. This allowed the authors to use the legion as the “go-to force,” where normally a single unit wouldn’t be enough.
Taking the US Army Ranger Regiment as inspiration, we can see the force is split up into three distinct categories. The first, is the ranger battalions propper. Used for long range reconnaissance and light infantry surgical raids, the ranger line companies can operate in large groups (usually no more than a company), or break down into smaller units to serve in extreme, high-mobility roles. The next group is the Ranger Training Brigade, which holds all the instructors for the Regimental schoolhouses. Last, the Special Troops Battalion is built around specialized jobs which require schools like high altitude parachuting, underwater operations, and special technology based missions.
Thus, the Legion could also have these same roles and more, with Jason and Nick combining a little green beret and First Special Forces into the mix.
The legion proper is the main arm of the force, drawn from the one percent of the one percent of male human operators throughout the Republic Military. Primarily used for small unit surgical operations, the line units can deploy anywhere in the Republic on demand.
Dark Operation Kill Teams are developed from legion line units. These groups receive additional training and are used in specialized roles. Their missions include high-value target operations and foreign internal defense, AKA, the training of other planet’s military forces. We see a great interpretation of what this unit would look like in Kill Team and Dark Operator: Rebellion.
The Valkyries comprise the third branch of the legion, although the House Of Reason changed the organization’s name, citing religious reasons. They have the longest training pipeline, lasting almost two years because of extensive medical training. The Recovery and Rescue Teams are tasked with three critical missions. Personnel and asset recovery, sensitive site exploitation, and asset denial. If you want someone or something stolen from the enemy or just plain blown up, the REC-Teams are the premier unit for such missions.
Rec-Team Pelican for the win!
Another excellent addition to the lore!
