As readers journey through the galactic conflicts of Immortal and Godsbane, one of the most intriguing yet enigmatic elements of the worldbuilding is nullspace—the dimension that makes interstellar civilization possible. While the books offer tantalizing glimpses of this realm through character experiences and technical references, the full scope of nullspace’s nature and mechanics has remained largely unexplored. Until now.
What Is Nullspace?
Nullspace is a lower-dimensional realm existing within the substrate of normal spacetime itself. Unlike theoretical “hyperspace” constructs that exist parallel to reality, nullspace is embedded within the fabric of the universe—a hidden layer accessible through specific technological interfaces but governed by its own distinct physical laws.
Think of it as the galaxy’s hidden highway system, where the normal rules of physics bend to allow what would otherwise be impossible: crossing thousands of light-years in weeks rather than millennia.

Importantly, these time differentials scale with the actual light-year distances involved in realspace—nullspace doesn’t arbitrarily scramble geography, but it does compress it in ways that make galactic civilization possible.

Ships enter at predetermined coordinates, follow calculated trajectories through gravitational currents, and exit at their destinations. This requires sophisticated navigation computers that account for both realspace geography and nullspace physics.
The process involves careful calculation of entry and exit points, trajectory plotting through gravitational currents, and constant monitoring of compensator systems. It’s as much art as science, requiring experienced navigators who understand the subtle flows and hazards of nullspace travel.
The Kṣiāyle Mystery
While most of the galaxy utilizes nullspace as a highway to be traversed, there exists one civilization that has somehow transcended these limitations. The enigmatic Kṣiāyle, with their distinctive silver-blue skin and alien culture, are known as “nullspace nomads” who somehow make their permanent home within this dimension.
How they accomplish this feat remains one of the galaxy’s greatest mysteries. While other civilizations must carefully plot courses and exit at specific destinations, the Kṣiāyle appear to navigate nullspace as easily as others sail planetary oceans. Their fleets drift through “the shimmering depths of nullspace” along “secret routes unknown to anyone else in the galaxy.”
This mastery gives them tremendous strategic advantages—the ability to appear anywhere without warning, bases that exist beyond the reach of conventional forces, and an intimate knowledge of nullspace that others can only guess at. For most civilizations, encountering Kṣiāyle forces is like trying to fight ghosts.
Nullspace as Narrative Device
Beyond its role as a travel mechanism, nullspace serves important narrative functions in the Dark Dominion series. The isolation of nullspace journeys provides opportunities for character development and introspection, while the inherent dangers create tension even during routine travel.
The dimension also embodies many of the series’ themes about hidden depths and unseen forces. Just as the political machinations of the Dominion operate beneath the surface of apparent order, nullspace represents the hidden infrastructure that makes that order possible—and the cosmic mysteries that lurk beyond human understanding.

As the Dark Dominion sequence continues, nullspace promises to play an increasingly important role. The Kṣiāyle’s mysterious mastery of this realm positions them as a unique threat, while the hints of entities dwelling in nullspace’s depths suggest cosmic horrors that may yet emerge to threaten galactic civilization.
