While the focus in Galaxy’s Edge is on the legion, one of the premier aspects that allows the legion to remain the Repub’s premier special forces is the Republic Marine Corps.

During the Savage Wars, multiple planets within the coalition deployed their respective marines during operations to protect the planets under Savage attack. These separate Marine Expeditionary Units eventually began working together as a unified whole to protect Coalition starships and for anti-boarding actions against the Savages.

During the initial blush of fighting over New Vega, the marines specialized in VBSS operations against pirates and other enemy space borne action decided to take their skills to the next level. The Vehicle Boarding Search and Seizure ops Marines boarded critical ships to the Savages and placed explosives along the hull while their brothers on the ground worked over the savages.

Once the Coalition had formed into the first Galactic Republic, a strong push came through the senate to unify the different marines and expand their role. They had excelled at boarding and breaking Savage starships, but with their association to the Navy, the new Repub marines could do so much more.

After countless battles during the Savage Wars and a host of brush fire conflicts, the Marines have been forged into a serious fighting force for the Republic. They maintain their roots in warfare across the millennia by maintaining a standing infantry force capable of short notice deployment. Those Marines that excelled beyond their peers in the art of mayhem can apply for SOAR selection to enter the Special Orbital Assault Regiments. These Hull Busters specialize in boarding ships to crack their spines and make them ripe for the taking. Lastly, the purview of special operations falls to the MARSOG units.
