During the Savage Wars, members of the military at large were loath to send in military working dogs against the monstrous Savage Marines, and made a decisive move to use robot canines. These four-legged bots with prehensile necks were based on an older design used by humans when they first left for the stars, and were only marginally effective in combatting savage incursions.
Most commands quickly disposed of the bots, citing while durable, they didn’t have the inane sense of the real deal. Those commands switched to HK, Hunter Killer models during a time of widespread warbot use against the Savage threat. The military’s hope was for the bots to fill the rolls the dogs could not.
That was until a certain General [[REDACTED]] discovered the dogs on [[REDACTED]] and immediately recognized them for what they were. A force multiplier.
The dogs from [[REDACTED]] had been part of a colonial mission which crash landed on the planet. Humans quickly starved as the world’s strange radiation poisoned them by not allowing them to process any food from the planet. The dogs the colonists brought with them, an offshoot of the Malinois breed, seemed unaffected.
When General [[REDACTED]] eventually discovered the packs of wild dogs on the planet, he was struck by the overwhelmingly powerful minds he found there. Over time, the energies had transformed the working dogs, granting them a more calculating intellect and psychic abilities.

Seeing the potential of animals with these abilities and needing to maintain the secrecy of their true existence from the public at large, the dogs were assigned to the legion. Forward Legion units could request a dog handler for their missions, which would be assigned to whatever platoon had the most need for the animal.
Since introducing working dog handlers to the legion, the units have used regular dogs as well, while Legion R&D has experimented with cyber augmentation for the animals to make them as hardy as their leej counterparts. This allowed the commands to utilize the animal’s natural senses toward danger recognition while not overly tapping the few dogs from [[REDACTED]].
